Best Practice for a Positive Care Partner Relationship

Best Practices for a Positive Home Care Relationship

Establishing a strong, respectful relationship with your Care Partner sets the tone for successful in-home support. Whether your provider is a trusted family member or an agency-selected Care Partner, creating clear expectations and a collaborative environment helps everyone — especially your loved one.

1. Communicate Early and Often

  • Share your child’s routines, preferences, strengths, and support needs upfront

  • Be clear about household rules, boundaries, and any cultural or safety considerations

  • Provide regular feedback — both positive and constructive — in a respectful manner

  • Don’t assume your Care Partner knows everything; ongoing communication helps prevent misunderstandings

2. Respect the Role and Boundaries

  • Care Partners are trained to assist with non-medical daily living tasks, not to perform skilled medical care

  • Avoid assigning duties outside the scope of their role (e.g., caring for siblings, deep cleaning, etc.)

  • Trust the Care Partner to carry out the responsibilities they were trained for, while staying within LIVEWELL guidelines

3. Create a Stable and Predictable Environment

  • Try to maintain consistent start and end times for shifts

  • Let the Care Partner know in advance about changes in schedule, school closures, or appointments

  • Structure helps the care partner — and your child — feel more confident and supported

4. Model Teamwork

  • Treat the Care Partner as a valued member of your child’s support team

  • Acknowledge their efforts and contributions

  • Approach challenges as partners — LIVEWELL is here to help mediate if issues arise

5. Use the Tools Provided

  • Submit schedule changes or requests for additional hours through the LIVEWELL Support Ticket system

  • Reach out to our team if you have questions or need clarification

6. Know When to Ask for Help

If something doesn’t feel right or if expectations aren’t being met, don’t hesitate to reach out:

  • We can coach, mediate, or rematch Care Partners as needed

  • You’re never expected to manage concerns on your own — we’re here to support you
